Delphi Where the Oracle Spoke
Delphi Where the Oracle Spoke
Delphi sits 180 kilometers northwest of Athens in the mountains, and the ancient Greeks considered it the center of the world. The archaeological site climbs Mount Parnassus through the Temple of Apollo, the Treasury of the Athenians, and the ancient theater, with views over an olive-filled valley to the sea.
The museum holds the Charioteer of Delphi -- a bronze from 478 BC so perfectly preserved the inlaid glass eyes still follow you across the room.
Practical notes: Drive (2.5 hours) or KTEL bus (3 hours). Budget a full day. The site is steep -- wear good shoes.
