Cape Sounion: The Temple and the Sunset
Cape Sounion: The Temple and the Sunset
70km south of Athens. The Temple of Poseidon — fifteen Doric columns from 444 BC standing against the Aegean on a cliff dropping 60 meters on three sides. The drive along the Athens Riviera passes beaches and seaside tavernas. Byron carved his name into a column in 1810.
Late afternoon for sunset. The sun drops into the Aegean directly in front of the temple and the columns turn gold. Bring a jacket — the cape catches serious wind.
