The Acropolis Museum Argues for the Marbles' Return
The Acropolis Museum Argues for the Marbles' Return
Opened 2009 to house Parthenon sculptures — and to argue they belong in Athens, not the British Museum. The top-floor Parthenon Gallery aligns with the temple visible through glass walls. Athens' frieze fragments displayed in original sequence with conspicuous gaps where the Elgin Marbles would go. The argument is architectural, not just political.
Lower floors: archaic sculptures, the Caryatids from the Erechtheion, painted pottery. Glass floors in the entrance reveal excavated ancient streets below your feet. The building is as much a statement as a museum.
